SERVING THE BREVARD COLLEGE Volume 73, Issue 8 COMMUNITY SINCE 1935 October 26, 2007 Breast Cancer Walk set for Sunday by Joseph Chilton Managing Editor Each August, RA's must perform exercises that will allow them to better serve the student body. Most of the time these exercises are hypothetical, but this year they produced an idea that will aid people far past the gates of Brevard College. Brevard College will hold a Breast Cancer walk on Sun., Oct. 28 from 2 p.m. until 3:30 p.m., with all the proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, an organization that specifically supports breast cancer research. The walk is the brainchild of a group of Resident Advisors who were asked to think of “Community Programming” ideas during RA training last August. Tyler Wilson, a junior baseball player, proposed the idea of a breast cancer benefit in honor of BC baseball teammate Jesse Swain’s mother, who had recently been diagnosed. “Jesse’s mother first came to mind when I brought this up. I know how much she means to Jesse and he is a close friend of mine and my teammate," said Wilson. "Ijust got the idea that we can do our part and try to raise as much money as we can and see where it can take us." Wilson’s brainstorm was so well received by the other RA’s and by the Brevard College Resident Directors that planning immediately began to make the proposal a reality. Swain is grateful for what is going on because he has seen what events such as this can accomphsh. "Breast cancer nearly ended my mom's life, but thankfully through the work of breast cancer awareness m the past my mom's life was spared." There is no cost to participate in the walk, which will run on a course of approximately one mile around the BC campus. “The walk is to raise awareness, we will raise the money in other ways,” said Kelley Eyster, Resident Brevard College fires AD by Ben Goff News Editor Last Thursday Brevard College announced via e- mail that Tom Collins was “no longer the Athletics Director forBC.” College officials will not elaborate on the reasons for Collins’ dismissal, but they confirm a statement Collins made last week to WSQL 1240 AM radio that he “was fired.” According to Director of Marketing and Communications Valerie Leeper the college cannot disclose information regarding personnel issues. Leeper stated that it would be Collins ’ choice whether or not to disclose any information about his dismissal. In an interview with WSQL last Friday, Collins declined to comment on the details of his dismissal, instead suggesting that it was up to the college to inform people of the reasons. Collins later appeared on former professor Preston Woodruff’s radio show “Mountain Air,” also on WSQL, and made a comment that he was fired pursuant to an argument between himself and the president of the college. Collins is the second athletics staff member to be fired unexpectedly and with little explanation this year. Head football coach Bobby Poss was dismissed over the summer. According to Leeper, these incidents are unrelated. Director of The Village, who has helped organize the walk. According to Eyster, money will be raised in a multitude of ways, but mostly through selling pink bracelets for $ 1 and tee shirts for $10 at the event. “We’ve also had people placing donation jars around town and at football and volleyball games,” said Eyster Eyster and Wilson hope that the breast cancer walk become an annual event on the BC campus each fall. They see the amount of support that this year’s walk has garnered as a positive sign in that direction. “The Resident Hall Council, the RA’s, the faculty, and a number of students have all been showing a lot of support by volunteering to help,” Eyster said. “We have a strong campus community and the students are always willing to support a good cause,” Wilson added.
